Ph.D. in Economics : Program Description


 

Entrance Examination: The Ph.D. program entrance examination will be given in the first week of August. The examination is given in English only and it consists of three parts: economics (at introductory level), calculus, and general aptitude.

Interview: Those who are successful in written examination will be interviewed before the final acceptance decision.

Prerequisites:

The students who do not hold an MA degree in Economics from Bogazici University (i.e.. students holding BA degree in any field or an MA degree in any field other than Economics, or an MA degree in Economics received from a different university) may have to take the following courses as prerequisite courses upon the decision of the graduate advisor. The following courses will be taken in the first year of the program:

 

EC501 – Microeconomics I

EC502 – Microeconomics II

EC503 – Macroeconomics I

EC504 – Macroeconomics II

EC521 – Mathematical Economics I

EC531 – Econometrics I

EC532 – Econometrics II

 

EC501, EC503, EC521, and EC531 are offered during the Fall semester and EC502, EC504 and EC532 are offered during Spring.

 

Students who have already completed the first year of the MA program in Economics at Bogaziçi University in successful standing (a grade of CC and above from all courses and a GPA of 3.25 out of 4.00) may be waive these courses upon the decision of the graduate advisor.

Preliminary Examinations: The preliminary examinations will be given in 2-3 consecutive days in the first week of August after the completion of the prerequisite courses. The examination will consist of three parts, three hours each: microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics.

Those students who fail in the first attempt but in successful standing (a grade of CC and above from all courses and a GPA of 3.25 out of 4.00) are eligible for a second time in September.

Core Requirements: All students must take EC601 – Advanced Microeconomics I, and EC603 – Advanced Macroeconomics I.

 

Comprehensive examinations in advanced microeconomics or advanced macroeconomics are given in July of each year. Students must choose one of the two options. In case of being unsuccessful in the first attempt, the exam can be taken again. This requirement must be completed by the end of the 4th semester after the completion of the prerequisite courses.

 

Field Requirements: Each student must enroll in four elective courses and choose one major, one minor field. Two of these electives must be in the student's major field, one from the minor field, and one elective is unrestricted.

 

The list of elective courses that can be taken from other departments will be determined by the graduate advisor.

 

Field exams are given in July of each year. Students must take the field exam in their major fields. In case of being unsuccessful in the first attempt, the exam can be taken again. This requirement must be completed by the end of the 4th semester after the completion of the prerequisite courses.

 

Paper Requirement: Each student must write a research paper and present it in the workshop (see below) by the end of the 6th semester after the completion of the prerequisite courses. This paper is expected to qualify as a chapter of the candidate's dissertation.

 

Workshop Requirement: Each student must enroll in Workshop in Economics every semester starting from the first semester after the completion of the prerequisite courses. The students are expected to attend weekly seminars, required to write referee reports in the 3 rd and 4 th semester of the workshop, and present their research papers by the end of the 6 th semester.
